Makar Sankranti (Makar Sankranti) is the main festival of India. Makar Sankranti (Sankranti) is celebrated in one form or the other all over India and Nepal.

This festival is celebrated only when the Sun comes to Capricorn in the month of Pausham. In the present century, this festival falls only on the fourteenth or fifteenth day of the month of January, on this day the Sun enters the zodiac sign leaving Sagittarius.

In Tamil Nadu, it is celebrated as a festival called Pongal, while in Karnataka, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh it is simply called Sankranti. The festival of Makar Sankranti is also called 'Uttarayan' at some places. From January 14 onwards, the Sun is moving towards the north.

That is why it is also called Uttarayan (the Sun towards the North). This is because the inclination of the earth keeps on changing continuously for every 6,6 months towards north and 6 months towards south. And this is a natural process. It happens on this day.
