In Jammu, this festival is known as 'Uttarain' and 'Maghi Sangrand'. Some people also know it by the name of Utrain, 'Atrain' or 'Atrani'. A day before this, the festival of 'Lohri' is also celebrated, which marks the end of Paushma.

The day of Makar Sankranti is considered to be the beginning of the month of Magh, hence it is also called 'Maghi Sangrand'.

On this day in the Dogras, Mansana (donation) of khichdi of mother's lentils is done. After this, the khichdi of maah dal is eaten. That's why it is also called 'Khichdi Wala Festival'.

The birthday of 'Bawa Ambo Ambo' ji is also celebrated on this day in Jammu. Fairs are held on this day on the banks of Devika river in Udhampur, at Dhagwal in Hiranagar and other holy places of Jammu such as Purmandal and Uttarbahini.
