It is annually propagated by WWE which scheduled to take place on September 27, 2020, at the Amway Center in Orlando, Florida. Earlier The event was originally scheduled to drive our attention at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey on September 20, 2020, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy banned all live public events from March 16 onward.

On the September 14 episode of Raw, it was announced that Nia Jax and Shayna Baszler will defend the WWE Women's Tag Team Championship at Clash Of Champions 2020 against The Riott Squad (Ruby Riott and Liv Morgan).

On the September 18 episode of SmackDown, it was announced that Cesaro and Nakamura will defend the WWE SmackDown Tag Team Championship against Lucha House Party at Clash of Champions.

At SummerSlam 2020 on August 23, 2020, "The Fiend" Bray Wyatt defeated Braun Strowman to win the Universal Championship for the second time. Following the match, Roman Reigns made his return and viciously attacked The Fiend and Strowman. On the August 24 episode of Raw, it was announced that The Fiend would defend the title against Strowman and Reigns in a Triple Threat No Holds Barred match at Payback 2020.

On the September 4 episode of Smackdown, Jey Uso defeated Baron Corbin, Sheamus, and Matt Riddle in a Fatal 4-way match and become the #1 contender for the Universal Championship match against Roman Reigns at Clash Of Champions 2020. Jey Uso vs Roman Reigns was officially confirmed for Clash of Champions 2020.
